Pop quiz: what do ninjas, pirates, indians, and cowboys have in common?
Answer: they make awesome costumes for dress-up parties!
Dressed in my best cowgirl outfit I attended a party on Saturday night, entitled "so a ninja, a pirate, a cowboy and an indian walked into a bar"... Holy MOLY the Aussies like their dress up parties!
The occasion? A house warming party for a friend who recently moved. I still can't get over the new house- an uber modern mid-city terrace surrounded by massive floor to ceiling windows- this house has party written all over it! The stone wall outside, the heated cesar stone floors, the massive amount of open space ... I am so happy for her, and SO jealous! Anyway.. back to the party- almost everyone arrived in character and a few stand-out costumes were over-the-top amazing!
Never one to miss an opportunity to dress-up, Nick opted to get in touch with his inner pirate in a big way! He usually isn't a big partier but dress-up parties seem to be an exception. And get this, Nick even herded me out the door Saturday afternoon to go thrift shopping for costumes! I must admit, I had a blast playing personal shopper, especially for the jewellery portion of outfit. We even found pirate-suitable clip on earrings! Getting all dressed up was super fun- me in my authentic Guess cowboy boots, and circa 2009 checkered shirt, and Nick in his handkerchief bandana and layers and layers of thrifted jewelry... he even got to wear his favourite pointy shoe- stripped sock combo! Yarrr!
The friends, the outfits, the music, the laughter, the dancing, the (ahem) beverages... definitely a night to remember.
This party was so much fun, I'm inspired to throw a wee costume party of my own! It's a proven fact, theme parties are a great idea - an instant crowd pleaser, costumes provide ample ice-breaking material for meeting new people and getting to dress to impress is waaay less expensive than dropping half a weeks' wage on the latest on-trend outfit.
{Since I'm in the market for suggestions, tell me, what are your favourite dress up party themes?}
